A More Progressive Approach to Legal Representation

Multiple felony charges filed against Tennessee woman

For many Montgomery residents, the criminal justice system may be something they only see in the movies and on television until they find themselves personally involved in a case. A person charged with a crime may soon discover there are many differences between what they see on TV and what happens in real life cases.

For instance, the process a criminal case takes may be confusing for those encountering the system for the first time. Different criminal charges can carry vastly different penalties, making it important for those charged to understand what is at stake and how to protect their rights.

For example, a Tennessee woman was recently charged with aggravated assault with a weapon, attempted procurement of a miscarriage and attempted criminal abortion after accusations that she attempted to end her pregnancy with a coat hanger. The case, which has made national headlines, originally involved first-degree murder charges, but that charge was reduced to an aggravated assault charge. The woman's attorney previously argued the charges should be dismissed for several reasons, including based upon her constitutional rights.

While it remains to be seen how the case will be resolved, it is an important reminder of the seriousness of charges for violent crimes. Felony charges can carry the possibility for extended prison sentences with the particular sentence ranging depending on the charge and facts of the case. There can also be other severe penalties, like fines, restitution or probation. Accordingly, when a person is facing the threat of criminal charges, they should act quickly to protect their rights and defend themselves vigorously.
